Shillong, Sep 10: Thousands of pigs have died across Meghalaya due to African Swine Fever, prompting pig farmers to take to the streets on Thursday demanding screening of pigs entering the state and compensation.
The Hills Farmers Union (HFU) took out a peaceful rally from Civil Hospital junction to Malki, alleging infected pigs brought from outside are spreading the disease.
“In some areas, most of the pigs have died because of swine fever. Thousands of pigs have died across the state and some villages have reported total loss,” HFU president Commander Shangpliang said.
He said the state does not have checkpoints to examine pigs before entry, exposing local herds to risk.
“The state does not have checkpoints to examine pigs coming from outside before allowing them to enter. The absence of mandatory animal-health screening, particularly along the Jorabat route, is exposing local herds to risk,” Shangpliang said.
He demanded immediate setting up of checkpoints and examination centres to screen animals before entry.
“We have come out because of frustration. We sought appointments but got no response,” he said, adding that the union had sought appointments with the Chief Minister and concerned minister.
The union also alleged that police personnel were only collecting money from pick-up vehicles carrying pigs.
“Police personnel are only collecting money from pick-up vehicles carrying pigs and are least bothered about whether dead pigs are being brought into the state,” Shangpliang alleged.
Farmers also sought government intervention to create awareness on livestock insurance and provide financial assistance to those who have lost livestock.
