Shillong, Sep 5: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui led Teachers’ Day celebrations in West Jaintia Hills on Saturday, saying teachers’ role has evolved and they must inspire students beyond marks and textbooks.
Addressing the 65th Teachers’ Day programme organised by DSEO West Jaintia Hills at District Library Auditorium, Jowai, Rymbui acknowledged concerns over Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) requirement for in-service teachers and said the compliance deadline has been extended from 2027 to 2028. He congratulated teachers who cleared MTET and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to address their issues.
In West Jaintia, District Awards went to Phrangki Pran of Thangrain LP School and Kissme Sungoh of Nartiang Presbyterian UP School, while Lamisakani Dkhar of Lissi Pearl Secondary School, Mukhla received Best Guide Captain Award.
In East Khasi Hills, DSEO observed District-level Teachers’ Day at St Mary’s Higher Secondary School. Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal stressed allowing students greater use of technology.
District Award 2026 winners were Balaram Sharma (Secondary) and Tyngshain Mylliemngap (Upper Primary). Guide Captain Jamesbond Rajee, St John Bosco HSS Sohra and J Streamlet Gedion KJP Girls’ HSS were also recognised.
In East Jaintia Hills, the celebration was held at Khliehriat Higher Secondary School where Deputy Commissioner Manish Kumar urged teachers to save students from drugs, dropouts and misinformation and to help them distinguish facts from rumours.
District awardees were Sumant Kumar, Principal of Topcem Public School, and Nazariness Nongtdu, Head Teacher of Khliehriat West Government LP School. State awardee was Respilda Phawa, Head Teacher of Mukhaialong Memorial LP School.
Adding vibrancy to the celebration, students presented songs, dance, recitations as a gesture of love, gratitude and respect towards their teachers.
