      Growth Surprises, Challenges Ahead

India’s economy started this financial year on a much stronger note than most experts expected. Despite fears that the West Asia crisis would pull growth down to 6%-7%, the April-June 2026 quarter recorded a solid 7.8%. This was not just a one-off number. Both manufacturing and services did well. Manufacturing in particular grew at 9.2%, its fastest pace in three quarters. The boost likely came from last September’s GST cut, the RBI’s 125 basis points of rate cuts through 2025, and companies pushing production ahead in anticipation of inflation and possible rate hikes later.

Capital formation also appears to be picking up, though how much is from government and how much from private players is still unclear. Either way, more investment means more jobs and activity, something that matters for states across the Northeast as new roads, rail and border projects get underway. The services sector too stayed strong, which helps because services exports have been supporting India’s trade balance.

But the road ahead looks tougher. Chief Economic Adviser V. Anantha Nageswaran has warned that uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz could keep crude above $80 a barrel. For a country that imports 85-90% of its oil, that is a pressure point, and for Northeastern states that depend heavily on road and air connectivity, higher fuel costs quickly show up in prices of essentials and travel.

That is why Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week urged people to buy local, avoid unnecessary foreign trips and weddings abroad, and cut down on gold purchases. For the Northeast, with its strong tradition of local crafts, handlooms and produce, the “buy local” push could open bigger markets if supply chains improve.

The bigger challenges are external and rural. Global growth is slowing and the rise of AI services abroad could hit India’s IT and service exports. At home, a weak monsoon is already showing up. July data from the Index of Industrial Production points to softer rural demand, and that will be felt in Northeastern markets that rely on agriculture and border trade.

Inflation is still within RBI’s comfort range but is rising, and the central bank expects it to touch 5.9% in October-December 2026. That will squeeze household budgets further. The early burst in manufacturing output is also unlikely to sustain at the same pace.

Q1 proved the Indian economy can still deliver despite global headwinds. For the Northeast, the next few quarters will test whether that momentum translates into better rural incomes, stable prices, and continued investment in infrastructure that connects the region more closely to the rest of India and to Southeast Asia.
