Shillong, Sep 2: Former Khasi Students Union (KSU) general secretary Donald V Thabah has alleged that the government intends to keep the union’s leaders behind bars by filing cases after cases.
KSU president Raymond Kharjana, vice president Pynkmenlang Sanmiet and general secretary Reuben Najiar are under 14-day judicial custody since August 20 after their arrest on the night of August 19, hours after incidents of unrest were reported during the union’s sponsored bike rally.
The three leaders were produced before the District and Sessions Judge, East Khasi Hills, again on Wednesday.
This was the third time they were produced during custody — after August 29 and August 31 — in connection with additional cases registered at Rynjah Police Station, apart from cases at Sadar, Mawlai and other police stations.
Speaking to reporters, Thabah said the students’ body does not have clear information on the cases filed but described it as harassment and humiliation.
He said the government’s actions are putting pressure on the leaders and that the public will not tolerate it. Bail has already been granted in some cases, he added.
