Shillong, Aug 20:  Unidentified miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at Nongmensong Police Outpost at around 9:30 pm Thursday.

According to the Officer-in-Charge, CRPF personnel were present on the upper floor at the time. No injuries were reported and damage was minimal with a chair charred. The outpost has no CCTV, but police said a case will be registered and footage from nearby properties will be examined.

It was one of two attacks on government property in 24 hours.

In the early hours of Thursday at around 2:30 am, a Water Resources Department Bolero, ML-01-4464, was gutted in a fire at the Executive Engineer’s office in Saiden, Ri-Bhoi. A two-wheeler parked beside it was also destroyed and another vehicle, ML-01-5359, suffered partial damage.

Fire and Emergency Services controlled the blaze. No injuries were reported and police have launched an investigation.

In South West Khasi Hills, unidentified miscreants lobbed a petrol bomb at the roof of the Veterinary Office in Mawlangwir. Staff found the device at around 9:30 am and informed Mawkyrwat Police Station at 10:43 am. No damage was reported. Neighbours heard the explosion but did not see the culprits.

Meanwhile, amid the ongoing KSU agitation, district administrations have imposed precautionary restrictions.

Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Dr Abhishek Saini ordered closure of all IMFL retail shops and bars on August 20 and 21 to prevent incidents linked to alcohol consumption.

In West Jaintia Hills, the District Magistrate banned sale and distribution of petrol and diesel in loose quantities with immediate effect under Section 223 of BNS. The order cites public safety and risk of fire following the August 19 KSU rally. Sale in jerry cans, bottles and other containers without authorization is prohibited. Violators face action under BNS. Diesel supply for mobile towers and road construction companies will continue.

A similar order restricting loose fuel sales was issued in East Jaintia Hills on August 19.
