Shillong, Aug 20: The Meghalaya High Court on Thursday directed authorities to take swift and stringent action to arrest those involved in the violence during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) rally in Shillong on August 19.
Taking up a suo motu PIL on the damage caused during the rally, a Division Bench of Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh termed the incidents serious.
The Court noted that the procession led to extensive damage to public property including government vehicles, outstation vehicles, and public transport vehicles. It also endangered common citizens including school-going children, and involved desecration of statues of National Heroes.
Advocate General Amit Kumar submitted that authorities have taken steps and some office bearers of the union have been arrested.
Noting that “more intensive steps need to be taken by the authorities immediately to apprehend the perpetrators of these incidents and bring them to book,” the bench directed a report of action taken to be filed on August 24.
