Shillong, Aug 16: The North East Development Initiative (NEDI) will expand its cold storage network with new facilities in Jowai and Mairang, aimed at bringing modern storage and distribution infrastructure closer to local communities and building a wider base of economic activity around them.
NEDI had inaugurated its first fish and livestock cold-storage facility at Mawblei, Shillong, in May 2026.
That facility was described as an important step in strengthening the value chain for producers, distributors, retailers and consumers.
Each new facility is expected to serve as a connection point for farmers, fish and livestock producers, transporters, technicians, distributors and entrepreneurs.
Marking Independence Day on August 15, NEDI renewed its commitment to the people and progress of North East India. Beyond fisheries, livestock and cold-chain infrastructure, the organisation is also working in skill development, aviation connectivity and tourism.
In skill development, NEDI has tied up with Don Bosco Technical School, Shillong, to create a pathway for training in cold-storage construction, installation, operation and maintenance, combining technical learning with industry exposure.
On connectivity, NEDI is exploring aviation initiatives for Meghalaya, including development and management of helipad infrastructure and the possibility of small charter and helicopter services to improve access across districts.
In tourism, NEDI has proposed an Indigenous Ornamental Fish Underwater Aquarium and Experience Centre in Shillong, envisioned as a destination that combines biodiversity, education, conservation and enterprise.
NEDI’s work is expanding beyond Meghalaya as well.
In Tripura, it has signed an MoU in the fisheries sector and is working on a proposed digital platform to connect artisans, agro farmers and aqua farmers with modern markets.
