Shillong, Aug 4:The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) today made an appeal to the people of Meghalaya to join its peaceful march on the Secretariat, which is scheduled for August 6.
The VPP said the march aims to protest against the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government led by the National People’s Party (NPP) for what the VPP called its failure to address the common man’s problems and for pursuing anti-tribal policies.
In a video message released today, VPP president and Nongkrem MLA Ardent M Basaiawmoit said there are countless issues and problems that the people of the state are facing, which have resulted in untold suffering.
Explaining the purpose of the march, Basaiawmoit said it is an expression of the people’s frustration and opposition to policies that are anti-poor, anti-local and divisive, along with alleged corruption and massive destruction of the environment.
The protest will be a test of strength for the VPP. While in opposition in the state Assembly, it holds the reins of power in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), where it has faced criticism over its handling of the succession to the Sohra Syiemship, removal of the Syiem of Mylliem and land amendment bill.
Thursday’s march will also give a sense of how much public support the party still has in the run-up to the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, the date of which has not been set. The VPP held the seat after winning it in 2024; the death of the MP, Ricky AJ Syngkon, in February necessitated the by-election.
