Shillong, Aug 1: The ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) distributed coracles to 25 tribal women fisher families at Umiam reservoir to strengthen livelihood opportunities in the region.
The initiative aims to enhance access to fisheries-based livelihoods and support women-led cage culture and fishing activities in the reservoir.
The programme, held on Friday, was organised by ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Ri-Bhoi Farmers’ Union (RFU) and the Meghalaya Department of Fisheries, under the NEH & TSP Programme of ICAR-CIFRI.
RFU President D. Majaw appreciated technical support offered by the institute in improving fish production and creating sustainable livelihoods for communities dependent on Umiam.
Senior Scientist Dr. Pronob Das briefed participants on the institute’s efforts to promote cage culture, aqua-tourism, biodiversity conservation and greater participation of women in fisheries.
Technical Officer A. Kakati explained the benefits and safe operating procedures for using coracles in the reservoir.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Banri L. Nongbri thanked ICAR-CIFRI for supporting women fishers in the area.
