I am writing to add my voice to the July 24th letter in your paper regarding NEHU’s delayed results. As the first batch of the new Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP), it really does feel like we are just “trial data in a poorly managed academic experiment.”
We finished our exams in May, and NEHU’s own calendar promised our results by July 10. It is now late July, and this silence from the university is hitting us hard in three major ways.
First, it is actively costing people jobs. Because we lack our final marksheets, many students were completely locked out of applying for the massive IBPS PO banking recruitment, which closed on July 26th. National job boards do not wait for NEHU’s internal delays, meaning local students now have to wait a whole year for the next hiring cycle.
Second, it is completely freezing our education. For hundreds of us in the FYUP, our current colleges do not offer the 4th year (7th & 8th semesters) because they lack the necessary setup. Our only choice is to transfer to a new college. But those colleges cannot give us admission without our final 6th-semester marks. We are totally stranded.
Third, and most alarmingly, this delay is going to ruin our 7th semester. Even if NEHU declares the results today, colleges will take weeks to complete the admission and enrollment process. That means our 7th-semester classes won’t begin until late August or even September. The 7th semester operates at a master’s level of difficulty. How are we supposed to learn a full, advanced syllabus if the semester is suddenly squeezed into just a couple of months? Teachers will be forced to rush, practical learning will be sacrificed, and our winter exams will inevitably get pushed into next year.
We did our part. We paid our fees, adjusted to all the confusing new rules, and wrote our exams on time. It is incredibly unfair that hardworking students are paying the price for the university’s lack of planning.
We desperately need the State Government and student leaders to step in. NEHU must either release the results immediately or officially allow colleges to accept us provisionally for the 7th semester based on our past marks so classes can start now. Please don’t let our futures stay on pause.
