Shillong, Jul 26: Students of Khrist Syiem Secondary School in Namdong got hands-on training in lifesaving techniques on Thursday, as the District Disaster Management Authority, West Jaintia Hills, teamed up with NDRF Guwahati for a disaster preparedness awareness campaign.
The session held at the school brought together students, teachers and local community members to learn practical skills for responding to emergencies before help arrives.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel led demonstrations on CPR, basic first aid, and rescue techniques. Students were taught how to perform chest compressions, manage injuries, and safely use emergency equipment. Trainers also walked participants through evacuation procedures and steps to take during floods, earthquakes and other disasters common to the region.
Officials said the focus was on building “first responders” at the community level. By training students and teachers, the programme aims to ensure that schools can act quickly and safely during a crisis.
The campaign is part of DDMA West Jaintia Hills’ ongoing effort to strengthen disaster resilience in villages and institutions across the district. Similar sessions are planned in other schools to spread awareness and practical response skills.
School authorities welcomed the training, saying it gave students confidence to help themselves and others in an emergency.
