Shillong, July 16: A 21-year-old youth from Mizoram surrendered to the police in Shillong on Thursday, following a series of allegations concerning rape and sexual exploitation.
The accused had been evading arrest since early July 2026, prompting the Meghalaya police to form a special investigation team and to issue a nationwide lookout alert.
According to East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, the accused was taken into custody at the Laitumkhrah police station and will soon be presented in court.
Authorities have registered cases against him under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include sections 3, 4, 11, and 12 of the POCSO Act, alongside section 64(1) of the BNS.
The allegations have spurred public outrage, particularly as claims surfaced on social media suggesting that multiple young women may have fallen victim to similar acts. This has led to heightened demands for justice and a swift response from law enforcement.
Following an FIR on July 7, police have appealed those who may have faced similar alleged crimes by the same accused to come forward and report.
