Shillong, Jul 12: Mahendraganj MLA Sanjay A Sangma visited Balupara village in South West Garo Hills, which has been severely affected by landslides triggered by incessant monsoon rains.
The MLA met with the affected families, assessed the extent of the damage and assured them of all possible support. He also extended financial assistance to the victims as immediate relief to help them cope with the aftermath of the natural calamity.
Although no loss of human life has been reported, the landslides have caused extensive damage to agricultural crops, affecting the livelihoods of several families in the area.
Sangma expressed concern over the situation and urged residents to remain cautious during the ongoing monsoon season. He also assured that the concerns of the affected families would be taken up with the concerned authorities to facilitate further assistance and rehabilitation measures.
District administrators across the state have been directed to be on high alert for rescue and relief operations, as widespread rainfall has raised concerns across the state.
Yesterday Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma chaired a review meeting with deputy commissioners to assess the ongoing impact of the continuous monsoon rain in Meghalaya.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Meghalaya, predicting heavy rainfall in isolated areas until around July 15.
The State Disaster Management Authority reported that this current monsoon spell, which began in the first week of July, has already affected 32 villages, especially in the Garo Hills and parts of the Khasi Hills.
