Shillong, Jul 12: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has opposed any attempt to resume uranium mining in Meghalaya and has urged the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to take a firm stand from the beginning.
In a statement, KHNAM working president Thomas Passah said the issue of uranium in the state has resurfaced after many years.
“The general public including the NGOs have rightly made a clear stand not to allow uranium mining,” Passah said.
He recalled that in the past, the Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL) had to leave the state after the KHADC denied them permission to extract uranium.
“Even today the key factor is the KHADC which has been entrusted with the right and control of land as per the Para 3 of the Sixth Schedule,” Passah added.
