Shillong, Jul 7: As part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and enhance emergency response mechanism, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), West Jaintia Hills on Tuesday conducted a district level mock exercise on an earthquake scenario.
The exercise was aimed at assessing the preparedness of various departments and emergency response agencies, strengthening interdepartmental coordination and enhancing the capacity to respond effectively during an earthquake or other disaster situations.
Held at St. Paul Secondary School, Mookaswan, Office of the Divisional Soil & Water Conservation officer, WK Woodland Hospital, Sabahmuswang and Kiang Nangbah Government College Playground, Jowai, the exercise included evacuation of occupants, search and rescue of trapped victims, administration of first aid, casualty management and transportation of the injured to designated medical facilities.
At WK Woodland Hospital, the exercise focused on the hospital’s emergency response, including causality management, triage, treatment of the injured, evacuation of patients and coordination among medical personnel.
Earlier, a training was conducted on Monday for officials and volunteers. The training included sessions on fire safety measures and use of extinguishers, improvised method of search and rescue, role of police and disaster communication.
The training was imparted by resource persons from the office of the Fire Service & Emergency, Superintendent of Police, District Medical & Health Officer, the Civil Defense and MPRO.
