Shillong, Jun 24: Social activist Greneth M. Sangma has urged the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) to restore its original branding by not omitting the word “autonomous” from the official logo and receipts of the district council.
Offering his support to Tura MDC Bernard N Marak, who had raised the issue, Sang said the omission is not a simple administrative error but a direct blow to the constitutional framework established under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India.
He said that the logo was specifically designed to grant strength, self-governance, and protection to tribal communities.
“Removing the word autonomous strips the body of its foundational identity. Without its autonomous status, the council becomes toothless, rendering tribal rights vulnerable and meaningless,” he said.
Urging the executive committee of the GHADC to convene a general body meeting, Sangma said the matter should be addressed before any further damage is done to tribal autonomy.
