Shillong, May 19: The state government has dismissed assertions that it has unduly favoured one particular contractor in the award of Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department projects.
A report in a section of the press on Monday alleged that BAC Infratech Pvt Ltd, a company based in Hyderabad, had received more than Rs 1,900 crore of PHE projects all across Meghalaya.
This state has proven to be such a goldmine for this company that 94 percent of its order book is accounted for in Meghalaya projects. Critics slammed the government for awarding so many contracts to a company from outside the state when local contractors find it difficult to be considered at all.
Today government spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla addressed the claims, saying that the state had strictly followed tender procedures while awarding the PHE projects.
Reacting to questions over multiple contracts being awarded to a single firm, Shylla said the projects were allotted through an open tender process and were based on the company’s qualifications, technical capability and prior experience.
He said the government could not selectively decide which companies should or should not take part in the bidding process as the tenders were open to all eligible firms.
