Shillong, May 14: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui today inaugurated the newly renovated SPS Tynrai Football Arena, located within the premises of Shillong Public School, Laitumkhrah, marking a significant step forward for the school in partnership with Tynrai Academy.
Addressing the gathering, Rymbui encouraged the students to keep their academic goals as their top priority while also pursuing their athletic interests. The minister pointed out that Shillong Public School is among the most sought-after educational institutions in the city, well-regarded for its dedicated faculty and commitment to student development.
Reminding students of the building’s historical significance, which once served as the office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills, Rymbui urged them to strive for excellence. He referenced notable achievements of athletes from the region, including Matsiewdor War, highlighting the potential for Meghalaya to produce Olympic-level talents.
The minister reiterated that with the enhanced sports infrastructure, students have the opportunity to discover and hone their talents, thus preparing them for future opportunities in both sports and academics.
Director of School Education & Literacy Banteilang Kharshandi informed that a MoU was signed in February between the Education Department and the Sports Department, and that the project was completed within just three months.
He expressed hope that similar initiatives would expand to other schools and districts to revive the spirit of sports across Meghalaya.
Following the inauguration, a friendly football match was held between officials of the Directorate of School Education & Literacy and students of Shillong Public School, promoting sportsmanship, community involvement, and participation.
