Shillong, May 8: The truckers’ association from Jaintia Hills districts has proposed a one-time settlement scheme for invalid vehicle documents in a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Transport Department Sniawbhalang Dhar.
The truckers cited that due to the accumulation of long-pending royalties and associated fees over the years, many owners find it financially impossible to renew their vehicle documents under current conditions.
Dhar acknowledged the challenges faced by truck operators and said that he is reviewing the situation and exploring which sections of the motor vehicle legislation could potentially be waived.
While certain stipulations linked to the central motor vehicle act cannot be altered, he said he committed to alleviate state taxes related to vehicle documentation. The deputy chief minister said that his department will draft a proposal to be presented to the cabinet, to enable a structured approach to the one time settlement initiative.
Meanwhile, Jaintia Hills Truck Association Committee in a memorandum stated that the one-time settlement will provide a much-needed lifeline to truck owners, allowing them to regularise their documents at an affordable, settled rate.
They also pointed out that implementation of this scheme will lead to an immediate influx of revenue for the State government through the collection of settled arrears that might otherwise remain unpaid.
The association also stated that the scheme will ensure that more vehicles operate within the legal framework, improving overall transport regulation in the state.
