Shillong, May 8: State Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Timothy D. Shira visited the ICAR Research Complex for the Northeast region today to discuss strategies for promoting sustainable agriculture and improving the livelihoods of farmers across the state.
During the meeting with scientists and officials, Shira underscored the significance of implementing sustainable hill farming practices and climate-resilient agricultural methodologies. He highlighted the necessity of enhancing fisheries and adopting farm machineries specifically designed for Meghalaya’s hilly terrain.
The minister emphasised the utilization of eco-friendly and farmer-centric technologies which are integral to achieving long-term agricultural sustainability and enhancing productivity in the region.
ICAR Director Dr. G. Kadirvel shared various technologies that have been developed for the benefit of farmers throughout the Northeast. He emphasised identifying and mapping suitable districts for millet cultivation to foster nutritional security and climate-smart farming systems.
He also noted that a range of sustainable Integrated Farming System (IFS) models had been designed to provide diverse livelihood opportunities for local farmers.
The interactive meeting was also attended by Dr. A.K. Mohanty, Director, ATARI Zone-VII, along with officials from various state line departments.
