Shillong, May: Advocate Dawanmon Pachiang has raised alarm over the unsafe transportation of stones by trucks, noting that it poses serious risks to public safety.
In a complaint to East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Pachiang highlighted that trucks, both large and small, often operate without the necessary tarpaulin covers or safety measures. He said this negligence is especially dangerous, creating a potential hazard for smaller vehicles and pedestrians.
There is a genuine risk of rocks falling from trucks while they are driving through busy streets, leading to accidents and, in the worst cases, fatalities, he added.
Pachiang also cited a troubling incident where a large boulder fell from a goods truck lacking safety ties or proper covering. He urged the office to take immediate action against such unsafe practices.
He urged the office to take immediate action against such unsafe transporters, enforce consistent safety protocols including proper wrapping and strapping of loads, and conduct regular inspections with strict penalties for violators to prevent recurrence.
“This matter directly affects public safety, and prompt action will go a long way toward preventing road accidents,” he added.
