Khliehriat/Mairang, May 2: Sham Sham Secondary School emerged as the overall champion team at the East Jaintia Hills District Level Inter-School Athletics Meet 2026, clinching a total of 89 points.
The event concluded today at the Teilang Playground in Dkhiah West, showcasing the athletic prowess of students from various schools.
As representatives from the district, winners will now advance to the state-level inter-school athletics meet scheduled to take place soon.
The closing ceremony was graced by the presence of dignitaries, including the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District, Manish Kumar, as the chief guest.
In his address, Kumar emphasized the significance of values such as hard work, teamwork, and perseverance in sports and academics alike. He applauded the participation of students, highlighting that their involvement reflects courage and commitment.
Kumar also recognised the importance of community support, urging parents, teachers, and local leaders to continue encouraging students in their sporting endeavours. With a promising future ahead, the increased focus on sports is expected to foster a culture of athletic excellence within the district.
Individual honours were also awarded to Best Athletes in all the three age categories with Ready Ryngkhlem of Wapung Higher Secondary School being adjudged Best Male Athlete while Lamsaka Dkhar of Sham Sham Secondary School was adjudged Best Female Athlete of the Under-14 Category.
In the Under-16 Category, Highbornson Muksor of Khliehriat Presbyterian Secondary School and Sandiya Dkhar of Sham Sham Secondary School were adjudged Best Male and Best Female athletes respectively.
In the Under-18 Category, Lastduh Lamurong of Don Bosco College and Rosy Sana of San Shnong Secondary School, Mukhaialong emerged as the Best Male and Best Female Athletes respectively.
In Eastern West Khasi Hills district, Little Star English Secondary School clinched the overall champion title at the fifth athletics meet, defending its dominance in district-level school sports.
Around 800 students, both boys and girls, from 26 schools across the district took part in the event.
Prizes, certificates, and trophies were awarded to outstanding athletes. Little Star English Secondary School secured the highest trophy count to retain the championship.
Langtor Higher Secondary School was named Best Discipline Team, while Pyndengumiong Presbyterian Higher Secondary School bagged the award for Best March Past.
The three-day meet, organised by the Office of the District Sports Officer (DSO), West Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the District Sports Association Mairang, concluded Friday at Khadsawphra College Ground, Mairang.
Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) President John F. Kharshiing attended the closing ceremony as chief guest in the presence of DSO West Khasi Hills Balarina Syiem, Sordar of Pyndengumiong village Bornad Syiemiong, along with school principals, teachers, and students.
