Khliehriat, May 1: A one-day-old baby was discovered abandoned on a road in the Umpleng area of East Jaintia Hills.
Jeny Sukhlaiñ, a resident of Khaidong, stumbled upon the infant late at night on April 29, while returning home after closing her shop. It was around 9:30 pm when she and her daughter heard the faint cries of a baby echoing from the roadside.
Sukhlaiñ said upon stopping their vehicle, she and her family were shocked to find a naked baby lying all alone with no clothes. Demonstrating remarkable kindness and quick thinking, Sukhlaiñ took the baby into her care. She wrapped the infant in warm clothing and ensured the little one was fed, providing immediate comfort and shelter until further help could be arranged.
Yesterday, Sukhlaiñ reported her discovery at the Umpleng police outpost. The case was then handed over to the women police station for further investigation.
Currently, the baby is under the care of the district child welfare committee and is receiving necessary medical attention at the Sutnga CHC.
Meanwhile, police have initiated inquiries to trace the parents or individuals responsible for abandoning the infant.
