Shillong, Apr 29: Tura and Jowai, two of the major venues for the 39th National Games, which Meghalaya will host in a year’s time, are short on rooms for athletes, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla informed today.
He was speaking after a meeting of the first General Governor Body Meeting of the National Games Secretariat Society here, which he chaired.
According to Shylla, it was felt that more members should be appointed for easy coordination. The minister also said that during the Games the whole state machinery will be involved and therefore more members should be appointed.
Shylla also informed that the construction of infrastructure for the Games is on track but while accommodation of delegates in Shillong is sufficient, Tura and Jowai are facing shortages.
He said that the government has a plan towards closing the shortages through schemes from the Tourism Department for boutique hotels. The government is reluctant to build residential accommodation for athletes itself as it may find these difficult to maintain once the sporting event is over.
Shylla also informed that, earlier this year, the central government Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports visited the state to take stock of Meghalaya’s preparedness and was satisfied by the progress.
