Shillong, Apr 27: West Garo Hills Auto Rickshaw Association has been accused of fraud, intimidation and unfair trade practices for refusing to hand over the prize to a winner of a lucky draw.
Social activist Greneth M Sangma has raised the issue and filed a complaint with the West Garo Hills Superintendent of the Police highlighting the distressing experience of one Jashtina Ch. Marak, who rightfully won a Maruti Suzuki Celerio in a lucky draw organised by the association.
Sangma cited this as a case of fraud and intimidation, endangering not only the financial security but also the safety of innocent citizens.
Stating that despite providing all necessary and valid documentation to claim her prize, Greneth stated that the woman has faced repeated refusals from the association, which is hiding behind the absurd technicality of a supposedly missing “counterfoil.”
He stated that the behaviour has not only caused great frustration but has also imposed significant financial hardships on her as she has travelled numerous times to their office in Tura. These trips have resulted in substantial transport costs that the association should be held liable for, the activist added.
As if this situation were not dire enough, Greneth said that retaliatory actions have been taken against other individuals for supporting Marak. He said filing of a false FIR against one Panchi M. Sangma and Parbinach. Marak by the association is a blatant attempt to intimidate those advocating for justice.
He urged the SP to investigate these fraudulent activities, dismiss the retaliatory FIR filed against the victims, and ensure compensation for Marak’s transportation costs.
