Shillong, Apr 11: Shillong Polytechnic inaugurated its diamond jubilee celebrations, highlighting a remarkable 60-year journey in education and vocational training themed, “Vocationalising the Future.”
Education Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Kumar Mantri who attended the inauguration ceremony highlighted the intriguing reality that a mere fraction of students pursue polytechnic education, despite thousands graduating from secondary schools every year. This choice, he argues, is both rare and forward-thinking, pointing to a future where skill-based learning assumes increasing significance.
Mantri noted a gradual shift in educational systems towards practical learning, aligning with reforms put forth by the Central Board of Secondary Education. This new approach prioritizes employability, as industries start favouring hands-on skills over traditional degrees. He discussed the Community Integrated Skill Learning (CISL) initiative, aimed at embedding vocational training into the school curriculum early on. This program aspires to universalize skill education and promotes learning from real-world family occupations.
HE called for institutions to dedicate at least 50 per cent of academic engagement to hands-on experiences, emphasising the value of involving students in real-life projects and developmental works. He also urged stronger industry linkages and enhanced campus recruitment opportunities.
Director of Higher and Technical Education H.D.B Sangma echoed these sentiments, advocating for the inclusion of contemporary challenges such as climate change and digital transformation in technical education. She highlighted the relevance of disciplines like cybersecurity and renewable energy, asserting the need to equip students with vital skills for improved employability.
A commemorative plaque was unveiled to declare the diamond jubilee celebration open.
