Nongpoh, Apr 10: Lumpongdeng Island is in the news for all sorts of reasons, not just centred on opposition to a proposed luxury tourism project there. Today, it was informed that two individuals were arrested for allegedly cutting trees illegally on the Umiam Lake island.
The incident was confirmed by Ri-Bhoi Tourism Officer Ban Nongkynrih, who stated that the Tourism Department received information about unauthorised tree felling on the island. Authorities dispatched police to the site, leading to the arrest of the two individuals involved.
Officials further informed that the Forest Department will conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter and carry out an inspection of the site to assess the extent of the damage and take necessary action.
