Shillong, Mar 10: The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Shillong, inaugurated its annual festival, ‘Fashion Spectrum’ with an explosion of colour, creativity and comic-inspired brilliance, at Umsawli, Mawpat yesterday.
This year’s theme, ‘ZAP!’ reverberated across the campus, symbolising a burst of energy and the unstoppable creative force that defines life at NIFT.
Fashion Spectrum is an annual festival celebrated across NIFT campuses nationwide, uniting academic excellence with vibrant co-curricular engagement. The festival serves as a dynamic platform where NIFT students and participants from reputed institutions converge to celebrate creativity through cultural, literary, environmental and sporting events.
Bamin Tarang, Director of Human Resource Development & Employment (HRD&E) at the North Eastern Council (NEC) applauded the conceptual depth and originality of this year’s theme. Emphasising the importance of creative courage, he said, “The world progresses because of those who dare to think differently. ‘ZAP!’ is not merely a sound; it is the spark of transformation. The energy I witness here today reflects the future of design leadership emerging from NIFT Shillong.”
He encouraged students to embrace uncertainty, celebrate their individuality and channel their creative disruptions into meaningful impact for the industry and society at large. He emphasised the rich cultural heritage of the north east and sought to sustain its crafts through contemporary designs and innovation.
Director of NIFT Shillong, Dr Brijesh Madhukar Deore, said that “Spectrum is not only a celebration but also a testament to teamwork, leadership and the transformative power of creative education. Let us embrace the spirit of creativity and make Spectrum 2026, a celebration to remember!”
Rima Sonar, Assistant Director, Office of the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts), Ministry of Textiles and Albert Malniang, General Manager at DCIS (District Centre for Information Systems), also attended the occasion.
The inaugural ceremony concluded with an electrifying song and dance performance by the students of NIFT Shillong, enthusiastic response from the audience, marking the beginning of a festival that promises dynamic competitions, thought-provoking discussions, artistic showcases and spirited sports events.
