Shillong, Mar 9: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) Upper Shillong circle and Synjuk Ki Nongsynshar Shnong have reiterated their opposition to a proposed plan to set up a petrol pump at 6th Mile.
The FKJGP and the village heads together voiced their protest during an inspection by officials from the Urban Affairs Department, district administration, Ashok Auto Service (Anjalee Petrol Pump), and officials from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
The proposal to set up a petrol pump is on a land belonging to the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department. The land is by way of compensation to the private petrol pump, which the government had sought to pave way for construction of a road project that includes widening and the building of a flyover in the area.
FKJGP circle president Kitboklang Nongphlang said the organisation did not receive any formal invitation to participate in the inspection. He said the organisation had earlier suggested that the proposed land be given to the fire and emergency service to set up an office because of frequent fire incidences in the area.
Nongphlang said the organisation will not allow the government to bulldoze it way by giving away land to a non-tribal. He warned of further action if the government does not review its decision.
