Shillong, Feb 27: Social activist Greneth M Sangma has lodged an FIR with the South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police against an executive member in charge civil works of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council for criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of public funds, and illegal diversion of resources for personal electioneering.
Sangma alleged that MDC Nathawal S. Marak of Wagesik constituency is involved in systematic looting of the public exchequer within the district council for personal electioneering in Gasuapara, Rongrikim and Silkigre MDC constituencies.
Stating that he had formally sought clarification from the MDC on several “ghost projects” that exist only on paper despite funds being fully withdrawn, the activist said he has received no response within the stipulated 15-day period.
According to Sangma, the MDC who had contested the MLA election illegally utilised public funds, contractors, and labourers to construct road projects in the Gasuapara, Rongrikim and Silkigre constituencies specifically to influence and buy the support of voters. Furthermore, a systematic pattern of corruption has been uncovered where numerous development projects in his own constituency are entirely missing on the ground, despite funds being fully withdrawn, he said.
He stated that the MDC had fraudulently used photographs from other departments to misrepresent project completion and exploited his role as in-charge of civil works to sanction projects purely for personal political capital rather than public welfare.
The social activist in the FIR urged police to also conduct an immediate spot inspection in Rongrikim and Silkigre to verify the illegal road constructions and the ghost projects Wagesik.
