Shillong, Feb 24: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today informed the Assembly that the government will speed up efforts to set up a veterinary college, two fisheries colleges and a dairy college – institutions that received cabinet approval in 2022.
Replying to a question raised by Gambegre MLA Mehtab Chandee A Sangma, who happens to be his wife, the CM said the proposed colleges were conceived in view of the pressing need to strengthen the livestock and allied sectors, which support a significant section of the state’s population.
“These were the three colleges which we have decided, keeping in mind the urgent need, as a large population of the state is engaged in livestock rearing,” Sangma told the house.
He noted that veterinary training centres are currently functioning in different parts of Meghalaya, though he did not specify their exact number or locations. When concerns were raised regarding manpower shortages in these centres, the Chief Minister acknowledged the issue, describing it as serious and assuring that the government is taking steps to address vacant posts at the earliest.
“It is definitely a matter of concern… we will ensure the different vacancies are filled up as soon as possible,” he said.
Addressing questions over the delay in preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for the proposed institutions, Sangma explained that procedural requirements – such as land identification and assessment of staffing needs – have taken time. He also pointed to the substantial financial outlay required for the projects.
According to him, establishing the veterinary college alone is expected to cost around Rs 334 crore. About 800 acres of land have been identified at Kyrdemkulai in Ri Bhoi district for the purpose, and 19 academic departments have been proposed as part of the plan. These factors, he said, contributed to the slower pace of progress.
