Shillong, Feb 8: The Rongara unit of the Garo Hills Youth Solidarity (GHYS) organisation has issued a condemnation over allegedly poor implementation of repair work to a suspension footbridge at Rongara.
The repairs had been sponsored by the World Bank in 2022-23 as a signboard near the bridge states.
“The suspension footbridge is of utmost importance to the local community, especially for students who depend on it daily to attend schools … villagers, sick persons and daily commuters,” the GHYS said in a release today. “It is deeply concerning that soon after the completion of the repair work, the bridge has already suffered damage, clearly indicating the use of substandard steel and inferior materials.”
The group demanded immediate repairs of sufficient quality along with a thorough inspection by the authorities.
