Shillong, Jan 12: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) has expressed shock and dismay over the non-payment of salaries to 288 contractual staff nurses for November and December 2025.
VPP Spokesperson Batskhem Myrboh stated that the non-release of salaries has caused immense hardship to the nurses and their families, affecting their ability to celebrate festivals and meet educational expenses.
The party criticised the government for neglecting the welfare of its employees, who serve the community, and urged immediate disbursement of the pending salaries.
The party reiterated its stance on prioritizing essential services and reducing wasteful expenditure, emphasising the need for responsible governance.
Meanwhile, the Hynñiewtrep Youths’ Council (HYC) said the non-payment of salaries to the contractual staff nurses is nothing short of “state-sponsored exploitation”.
“Making nurses work without pay and without formal service orders is a gross violation of labour norms, service rules, and basic human dignity. Verbal assurances and informal instructions cannot replace written orders or justify months of unpaid labour,” HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem said in a statement.
While the government publicly claims to strengthen healthcare the Synrem said it is pushing frontline workers into financial distress, mental anxiety, and professional insecurity, which exposes a complete lack of accountability within the concerned department and the State government.
The HYC demanded immediate payment of all pending salaries from October 2025, with arrears cleared in full and to issue a written extension order for all affected contractual nurses. It said strict action must be taken against officials responsible for deliberate neglect.
