Shillong, Jan 12: Condemnations continue to pour in over the recent murder of Dilseng M Sangma, a member of the ACHIK pressure group, in Garo Hills.

The Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Eastern Zone said with the heinous and brutal incident all illegal stone quarry operations must be shut down and eviction of illegal settlers.

Sangma was killed on January 9 while a group of ACHIK members were inspecting stone quarries in West Garo Hills that were suspected of being illegally run.

GSU Zonal President Goera R Sangma has demanded immediate arrest of those involved and a swift investigation.

The GSU also appealed for peace and communal harmony, reaffirming its commitment to justice and protection of A•chik people’s rights.

Advocate Joshua Ch. Marak in a statement said the brutal killing of Sangma is not only an attack on an innocent life but also a direct assault on the peace, harmony, and social fabric of the region. “Violence against indigenous people is wholly unacceptable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law,” he said.

Marak urged the government to immediately ensure strict enforcement of law and order throughout the Garo Hills region and perpetrators responsible for the heinous crime must be identified, apprehended, and punished in accordance with law.

Furthermore, he said there should be a thorough and lawful verification of all non-tribal residents in the region, strictly in accordance with existing legal provisions.

Calling for strict implementation of Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, 2016 he said this will filter out Bangladeshi infiltrators.
