Shillong, Dec 15: The State has begun verification and reconciliation of sites for construction of cremation pyres.
In its submission before the High Court, the State said, based on the status report filed by Amicus Curiae N. Syngkon, verification process has been started and is in progress.
The Amicus Curiae in the status report had said there are 59 locations where cremation pyres need to be set up.
A division bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Hamarsan Thangkhiew directed the State to identify sites for cremation after compilation of all the reports.
In its submission before the court, the State said a state level committee has given priority for identification of land in villages where land availability constraints are being faced and that budgetary proposals have been formulated for extending financial assistance for the construction of cremation pyres at an initial amount of Rs 1 lakh per crematorium and community contribution as an additional measure where the overall expenditure exceeds the sanctioned amount.
The State said the committee is constantly monitoring the implementation of the direction of the court and assured to submit updated and consolidated reports, including complete data on land availability, infrastructure requirements and funding proposals.
