Shillong, Dec 11: Sohmynting, one of the oldest villages in West Jaiñtia Hills witnessed a grand festival celebrating its rich cultural heritage and the unique plant that has long supported the community’s livelihood.
Flemingia vestica—known locally as Sohphlang in Khasi and Saphlang in Pnar—is a seasonal tuber and a cherished delicacy, as well as one of the most important agricultural products of the village. It is planted in spring and harvested from October to February every year.
JHADC MDC MB Rymbai, who represents the area, expressed concern over the decline in the number of farmers engaged in Sohphlang cultivation and hoped the festival would reinvigorate the spirit of the community and encourage increased production.
Sohphlang cultivator Romika Pyrtuh, who has earned her livelihood from the crop for more than 30 years, emphasised that the tuber is not just an agricultural product but an integral part of their culture. She explained that cultivation involves several stages—from selecting suitable land, to harvesting and cleaning—each requiring knowledge and care. She added that beyond being a widely loved delicacy, Sohphlang is also believed to possess medicinal properties.
Dr. E.S. Langshiang, who has extensively studied plants and insects in the village, praised the community’s long-standing tradition of protecting sacred groves and forests.
Sohmynting is home to several community forests, two clan forests, and one sacred grove, all contributing to the village’s lush greenery.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. H.H. Mohrmen highlighted the village’s strong potential to attract tourists. He expressed hope that Earth Tree, in collaboration with the village Dorbar and the Department of Tourism, will help promote Sohmynting as a tourism destination. He also stressed that farmers in the village have always grown vegetables using traditional methods that are organic by default, but, unfortunately, do not receive the price they deserve in the market.
Daloin of Elaka Jowai P. Kynjiñ reminded the gathering that vegetables grown in Sohmynting are among the most sought after in the Iawmusiang market.
District Tourism Officer D.S. Shylla said the government is taking all out effort to promote tourism in the state and urges the youth to avail the opportunity by applying the different scheme the government is offering now.
