Shillong, Dec 6: The Hynñiewtrep Border Dispute Redressal Forum (HBDRF) has expressed frustration over the lack of response from the government despite multiple follow-ups on issues concerning the disputed Block 1 and 2 along the Meghalaya-Assam border.
An executive committee meeting of the forum was held today to assess the progress made on the resolutions stemming from discussions held with the Chief Minister and government officials on July 25.
“We deserve to know the progress,” HBDRF leader Thomas Passah said, adding that slackness on the part of the government would pose challenges for border residents.
The forum said it had suggested that development projects in the border area should not be interrupted, with equal contributions from both Assam and Meghalaya. Passah said the issue of obtaining essential documents—such as birth certificates, PAN cards and Aadhaar numbers—was also highlighted.
On issuance of Sanad by the Jaintia Hills District Council, he said the government should formally recognise these villages and issue village court head sanctions for smoother governance.
The HBDRF also plans to request another meeting with the Chief Minister to push through with the suggestions.
In light of the recent tensions, particularly opposing Assam’s intention to establish a police outpost in Lapangap, the forum said the Meghalaya government must intervene to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order like the one during the harvest.
