Shillong, Nov 27: The East Jaintia Hills’ District Sports Officer, district administration and District Sports Promotion Society honoured the district’s medal achievers from the Inter School Athletics Meet 2025 in Khliehriat today.
Sutnga-Saipung MLA Santa Mary Shylla was the chief guest. She lauded the winners, stressed the need to tackle substance abuse and announced plans for swimming pools and awareness programmes to engage youth in constructive activities.
Deputy Commissioner Shivansh Awasthi praised the athletes, highlighting the state government’s focus on youth development and sports given that a high proportion of Meghalaya’s population are youths.
He also announced plans for the first-ever East Jaintia Hills District Games in early 2026, featuring 12 sports, to prepare for the 2027 National Games in Meghalaya.
The event included cash awards for medal winners and coaches and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to hand over the Khliehriat squash court to the East Jaintia Hills District Sports Association.
