Jowai, Nov 25: Congress MDC of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) Madonbai Rymbai has said that the NPP-led Executive Committee has disregarded 2015 law which states that only males can contest the Waheh Shnong elections.
The Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District (Establishment of Elaka and Village Election Act 2015 Appointment, Power, Functions and Jurisdiction of Dolloi/Sirdar and Waheh Shnong) governs the election, appointment, powers, functions, and jurisdiction of traditional village leaders, including the Doloi/Sirdar and Waheh Shnong.
Rymbai stated that this Act was disregarded when recently a female contested the election of a waheh shnong at Sohmynting village. He said that the essential aspects of this law were not communicated effectively to the Doloi, which could have helped prevent any misinterpretation regarding eligibility to contest for the position of waheh shnong.
