Shillong, Nov 15: Hundreds of students, residents and government officials participated enthusiastically in the Ek Bharat–Aatmanirbhar Bharat Unity March held across Ampati on Friday morning to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of India’s first Home Minister, the Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak, Superintendent of Police Vikash Varma and senior officials of the district administration led the march, which began from the DC’s office complex and culminated at the Ampati Students’ Field.
Participants from various government departments, social organisations, schools and colleges marched with tricolour flags, raising spirited chants and spreading the message of unity and self-reliance.
Before the march commenced, a brief programme was held at the DC’s office complex featuring floral tributes to Sardar Patel and a cultural performance by students of Ampati Degree College.
Speaking on the occasion, Nayak expressed happiness that the Unity March coincided with Children’s Day, making the event even more meaningful. Paying tribute to Sardar Patel, she described him as a rare leader whose contributions shaped both pre- and post-Independence India.
Recalling that Patel is regarded as the architect of the All India Services, she noted, “Most of the administrative services are a result of his vision. Because of this system, we enjoy smooth governance and efficient administration today. It is therefore a fitting occasion to remember him and renew our commitment to nation-building.”
