Shillong, Nov 12: A nationwide campaign to reduce pneumonia deaths began today and will run until February 28 next year.
Pneumonia is a major killer of children under 5 years old, with one life lost every 43 seconds to the disease. This equates to over 7 lakh children every year worldwide. The vast majority of these deaths are preventable through measures like the pneumococcal vaccine, which protects against bacterial pneumonia.
Dr Angel JO Kharduid, the East Khasi Hills District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) spoke about the launch of the SAANS (Social Awareness and Action to Neutralise Pneumonia Successfully) campaign, which aims to neutralise pneumonia through community awareness and participation. The campaign focuses on early identification, management and prevention of pneumonia at community and facility levels.
Dr EL Kharmutee, the District Maternal and Child Health Officer, highlighted the campaign’s objectives, including training healthcare workers, promoting awareness and ensuring essential supplies like oxygen and antibiotics. The campaign urges parents to adopt safe practices, such as using gas or electricity for cooking and avoiding smoking near children.
National Newborn Week, observed on November 15-21, aims to raise awareness on newborn care and safe practices. Dr Kharduid urged coordinated efforts between community and health systems to safeguard newborns and children, ensuring they survive and thrive.
