Shillong, Nov 1: The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) today announced the launch of a research fellowship dedicated to honouring the life, artistic contributions, and humanitarian philosophy of the legendary cultural icon Zubeen Garg.
The initiative aims to preserve and promote the values of creativity, compassion, cultural unity, and humanism that Zubeen embodied throughout his life.
Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque said Zubeen shared a cherished and emotional bond with USTM. “The University fondly remembers his visits to the campus for film shoots including scenes from several of his acclaimed works, including parts of his last film, Roi Roi Binale,” he said during a press conference.
“His heartfelt interactions with students and faculty always left a lasting impression. USTM is also proud to have conferred upon him the Honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) during its 10th Convocation, an honour he accepted with his characteristic grace,” Haque said.
He informed that the university has already received an encouraging number of responses from individuals inspired to undertake research under this fellowship reflecting the deep respect and emotional attachment that people hold for Zubeen.
To ensure academic and cultural depth, USTM is also in the process of forming an Advisory Council comprising scholars, artists, cultural historians and family members who will monitor progress of the research outcomes.
The university invites like-minded individuals and experts to associate with its noble effort.
“This initiative is not merely an academic project it is a tribute aimed at inspiring future generations and keeping alive the spirit, philosophy, and humanity of Zubeen Garg in the hearts and minds of learners, researchers, and artists,” the Chancellor said.
