Shillong, Oct 21: Rajabala MLA Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi has complained to the Chief Minister about an eviction drive carried out by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and NGOs citing lack of adherence to legal protocols.
According to Kazi, an eviction drive was conducted at Rajabala Bazar on October 15 that has raised significant questions about procedural fairness, transparency, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
In his letter to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the MLA said he had received numerous complaints from affected residents and local stakeholders during his visit on October 18 about the eviction drive. He said there was no prior notice served and that there was disproportionate use of force.
Kazi said certain individuals were targeted causing intentional damage of properties. “Such actions, if unaddressed, not only undermine public trust in our institutions but also risk exacerbating social tensions in an area that is already sensitive due to its diverse demographic composition,” he said.
He urged the Chief Minister to initiate an impartial inquiry into the alleged irregularities by constituting a high-level committee to investigate and review the actions of the GHADC authorities and involved NGOs.
Kazi also sought redressal and compensation to affected residents. “Such steps would go a long way in restoring confidence among the local populace and upholding the principles of equity and rule of law in Meghalaya,” he said.
