Shillong, Sep 23: The Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) held its convocation at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture here today.
The event brought together 1,005 graduates, including 37 PhD recipients, marking a significant milestone in the university’s expansion in academics and research.
Chancellor Dr. Glenn C. Kharkongor unveiled a portrait and presented citations of former VC Robert Garnett Lyngdoh, which were received by his sister and former cabinet minister Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Additionally, a grant of 50 lakhs was announced towards the RG Lyngdoh Memorial Fund with a committee to be chaired by MLCU board member Patricia Mukhim.
Vice Chancellor Dr. T.K. Kharbamon reflected on the university’s accomplishments, including the recent ISO 2100:2018 certification. She highlighted MLCU’s growing reputation for excellence in education.
Graduate representatives Vania C. Shadap and Walunir Jamir shared their perspectives, expressing their gratitude and aspirations on behalf of their peers.
A key moment of the ceremony was the Lifetime Achievement Award by National Lutheran Health and Medical Board (NLHMB), the sponsor of the university presented to Dr. Ramesh C. Deka, Former Director of AIIMS, New Delhi. Dr. Deka spoke with deep humility, stating that this award was one he would cherish more than any other. He pioneered research, surgical intervention and is known for his concern and work for the marginal population. He vowed to continue his dedication to advancing health education and supporting underserved communities.
The convocation address was delivered by Summiya Yasmeen and Dilip Thakore, Founders and Editors of EducationWorld and ParentWorld, who urged graduates to advocate for high-quality education and making education accessible to every individual. They stressed on the importance of early childhood care and education and that every graduate should acquire vocational skills beyond academics. The importance of personal and professional goals was also emphasised.
Ampareen emphasised the importance of responsible community service, quality education, good governance and urged graduates to contribute positively to society.
The convocation event also acknowledged the achievement of the distinguished alumni and the association of other institutions with the university.
The ceremony concluded with the MLCU anthem, followed by the annual Aurora Borealis music festival, featuring performances by Brothers in Jam, KROOZE, and Da-La-Riti.
