Shillong, Sep 19: The District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills promulgated an order under Section 163 of the BNSS prohibiting the illegal killing of fishes and environmental degradation along Umiew and Umngot Rivers, falling under Mawryngkneng and Mawkynrew C&RD Block and the adjoining areas through the use of poisonous chemicals and explosive substances.
The order was necessitated following reports that miscreants are rampantly killing fish through haphazard use of poisonous chemicals and explosive substances that can cause irreversible damage to the river and endanger the aquatic life therein unless prevented.
Any violation shall be prosecuted under Section 223 of the BNS. This order came into force with immediate effect and will remain in force until further orders.
