Shillong, Aug 31: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), West Jaintia Hills District, conducted a Legal Literacy Class on the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Mukhla, on August 28.
The program aimed to educate students about child rights, child safety, and legal protection under the law. Resource person D. G. Kharshiing, Secretary, DLSA, West Jaintia Hills District, explained the key provisions of the POCSO Act, emphasising the importance of reporting cases of abuse and safeguarding children from exploitation.
Kharshiing stressed the crucial role of schools, teachers, and parents in ensuring a safe environment for children. She encouraged the students to speak up courageously against any form of abuse and informed them about the availability of free legal aid services through the DLSA.The interactive session saw active participation from the students, who asked questions and shared their views.
The session proved highly beneficial in enhancing the students’ understanding of the POCSO Act and their role as responsible individuals in building a safer society.
The DLSA’s initiative aims to promote awareness about child rights and safety, empowering students to become advocates for a safer and more responsible community. By educating students about the POCSO Act, the DLSA seeks to prevent cases of child abuse and exploitation, promoting a culture of safety and respect for all.
