Khliehriat, Aug 26: The Anti-Narcotics Task Force in East Jaintia Hills arrested two persons suspected to be part of a drug syndicate and also seized contraband valued at around Rs 60 lakhs in the illegal market, police said today.
Acting on a tip off, police had conducted an operation at Umkiang Patrol Post on August 25 and arrested one Hajrat Umar (28)of Kaliachak, District Malda, West Bengal while on his way from Silchar, Assam to Shillong.
East Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said the team recovered 11 soap boxes containing 137.86 grams of heroin and two mobile phones from his possession.
Kumar said later the team arrested one Phulchand Ali of Lum survey, Shillong who is involved in the inter-state transportation of drugs.
“These apprehended drug suppliers are suspected to be part of larger organised crime syndicate,” he said.
A case has been registered under the NDPS Act at Lumshnong Police Station and investigation is underway.
