Shillong, Aug 21: Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) Chairperson Agatha K Sangma has written to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma calling for implementation of a systemic and humane framework for the welfare of street dogs in Meghalaya.
Agatha expressed appreciation for the Chief Minister’s efforts and called for a comprehensive approach that promotes compassion, care, and co-existence.
In her letter, she stressed on the need for designated feeding zones, awareness campaigns, sterilization, and vaccination drives to ensure the well-being of street dogs.
She also cited the Central Government’s initiatives, including the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, as guiding frameworks.
“We believe that Meghalaya can become a model state that embodies the spirit of ahimsa and co-existence,” Agatha said, urging the Chief Minister to take concrete steps toward establishing a humane policy for street dog welfare.
