Shillong, Aug 11: In a bizarre incident at Jowai’s popular picnic spot of Syntu Ksiar, a man was critically injured after shooting himself accidentally in the head with the service pistol of a policeman friend of his on Sunday evening.
The victim, identified as Wanda-o Najiar, was with friends, including Sub-Inspector Wewanroy Challam, Second Officer in charge of Nartiang Police Station, when the incident occurred between 4:30pm and 5pm.
According to police, Najiar, who was reportedly intoxicated, took Challam’s service pistol and began handling it when the firearm accidentally discharged, striking him in the head. Challam told investigators that there had been no altercation before the incident and that the shooting was unintentional.
Najiar was initially rushed to the nearby Maternal and Child Health Hospital in Panaliar before being transferred to Woodland Hospital in Sabahmuswang and ultimately to the main Woodland Hospital in Shillong using Challam’s for advanced treatment.
The police have seized the weapon for forensic examination and issued a show-cause notice to Challam in connection with the incident. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
