The 6th Meghalaya Games is all set to begin formally on Monday with athletes and officials arriving in Jowai tomorrow.
The Games are set to run from January 20 to 25, though the football events have already started.
Addressing a press conference today, Meghalaya State Olympics Association (MSOA) president John F Kharshiing informed that the games for the first time will see seven para-athletes, four women and 3 men who will take part in the para-shooting event (pistol and rifles).
He said that the State is dedicated to promoting inclusivity in sports and hoped it would see an increased involvement of para-athletes in the future. Two accomplished Australian athletes, high performance team of MSOA Robert Kabas and Ian Campbell will be present to witness the opening of Meghalaya games, he informed.
Kharshiing said around 3500 athletes will compete for a total of 1600 medals.
Kharshiing commended the district administration and the 15 committees for their dedicated efforts in the preparation for the Meghalaya Games.
West Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Batlang S Sohliya highlighted the unique efforts undertaken in preparation for the Meghalaya games, including a curtain raiser event held earlier this week.
He informed that the games Mascot “U Kiang”, in the form of a leopard, the state animal adorned in the attire of a freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, was conceptualised by Kamtre Sumer as part of an open competition organised by the office.
He further informed that the headmen of each locality in Jowai town have actively contributed to the preparation, showcasing the community involvement in making the event a success.
Superintendent of Police Chemphang Syrti informed that the district police force is prepared and deployment will be made where necessary to ensure security during the Meghalaya games. He also said traffic regulations have been made to facilitate and ensure seamless traffic movement throughout the games.
